As the genocide in Gaza continues and the war on Iran shows no signs of stopping, European rearmament is gathering pace.
Conscription is returning to the continent, our own government tells us that we must return to a “war footing”. And every day, workers are told that more money will be needed to fund expanding military budgets - and that our crumbling public services and welfare state will pay the price.
Andy Burnham’s new military AI deal, designed to “stop protesters targeting defence sites”, tells us everything we need to know about his government’s relationship with the military-industrial complex. His refusal to stop weapons sales to Israel shows that, when it comes to genocide, business continues as usual.
Since our last AGM, the world has become an even more dangerous place. The assault on Iran and attacks on Latin America tell us the new American imperialism promises to be even more brutal than the last.
The European response? Rearm. And prepare the working class to fight.
But the movement against war is growing.
The Palestine solidarity movement will not rest until the genocide ends, with demonstrations planned worldwide on 10 October. Tens of thousands of school students are also joining forces across Europe to strike against conscription.
“From this International Anti-War Conference we raise our united voices: against war and genocide, and the growing nuclear threat, and for peace.”
That was the opening line of the statement agreed at June’s International Anti-War Conference - and we mean it.
